Description
The Elgin Valley is our favorite place to tour. Enjoy sparkly apple ciders, spectacular mountain passes and cool-climate wine, for a day you won't forget.
The Elgin Valley is located approximately one hour to the east of Cape Town, over the Sir Lowry’s mountain pass. It is known for its cool-climate wines, particularly chardonnay and pinot noir, and produces 60% of South Africa's apple crop.
We recommend booking this tour over a weekend (Friday-Sunday), so that we can fit in a visit to the popular Elgin Railway market.
Itinerary
On our way from Cape Town to the Elgin Valley, we stop in Somerset West for an olive oil tasting at the award-winning farm Morgenster Olive Farm.
In Elgin, we stop at the legendary Peregrine Farm Stall for some coffee and rusks and to browse the many locally-produced farm goods, from honey and chocolates, to preserves and cheeses, to fresh local apples produced in the valley.
We will also visit one of the many intimate wine farms in the Elgin Valley. Here you will get a feel for the off-the-beaten-track intimacy which Elgin is famous for amongst locals, and taste some of the best wines this region has to offer, from elegant reds, to crisp whites and renowned M.C.C. (sparkling wine).
For lunch, we recommend The Pool Room at Oak Valley, to taste their farm-produced pork, fruit, and wine. Lunch is for client’s own account, but we will be happy to assist with bookings.
